Although the netCDF data model and format are language-independent, all netCDF APIs are currently implemented over C or Java:

• Unidata currently supports APIs for C, Java, and Fortran-90
• Unidata-supported legacy interfaces for C++, Perl, and Fortran-77 are provided, but no longer actively developed or maintained
• Third-party alternate C-based APIs have been developed for Fortran-2003, C++ for netCDF-4, and Perl
• Other third-party C-based libraries include Python, Ruby, Matlab, Objective C, Ada, and NCL
