Subject: Changes to the NWS Production Suite
1. There were some problems with the new server configuration for
ftprd.ncep.noaa.gov. On Thursday, 4 May service failed back to the old server.
Problems have been corrected and service was transferred to the new server on
Monday, 8 May.
If you require more information about this change please send a message to:
NCEP.Helpdesk@xxxxxxxx - for questions/issue about general access to this server
NCEP.List.PMB-PCSP@xxxxxxxx - for questions/issues related to the data content on
these servers
2. The transition to the next Central Computer System is expected to begin in
August 2006. A moratorium on changes to the NCEP Production Suite will begin in mid
August and conclude when the new system becomes operational in January 2007.
Preparation for the delivery of the new system began with the shutdown of the Frost
system on Friday, 28 April. The Snow system is scheduled for shutdown on Thursday,
15 June. A temporary replacement (Aqua) for Frost and Snow is scheduled to be on
line on Thursday, 1 June. Aqua will be the same Power5+ architecture as the CCS
replacement systems. More details on the transition schedule
will be provided as they become available.
3. An upgrade to the Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) is
tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, 30 May. Parallel data sets for the new GEFS are
available at:
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gens/para/
4. The replacement of the NAM-Eta with the NAM-WRF is tentatively
scheduled for Tuesday, 13 June. Parallel data sets for the new NAM/WRF are
available at:
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/nam/para/
5. As soon as the moratorium on changes at the NWS Telecommunications Operations
Center (TOC) is lifted, NCEP will begin the transition from GRIB1 to GRIB2, by
placing duplicate GRIB2 files on the TOC FTP server. Both sets of data will remain
on the TOC FTP server for a minimum of 180 days to allow users to transition to the
GRIB2 data sets. More information will be provided once the TOC moratorium has
ended.
