Russ is right; you may actually have libcurl 7.x.
Technically, the "desired" version is version 7.16.4 or later.
The problem is that the curl_easy_setopt flag
CURLOPT_KEYPASSWD is not defined until curl version 7.16.4.
I have built in a work around in configure.ac, but I still
prefer that people have version 7.16.4 or later.

Hi Dennis,
Wondering about the requirement for curl version 7+ for netCDF4.2. On
RedHat systems, rhel6 has libcurl.so.4 installed, and that library
depends on a number of other libraries, which I imagine would need
higher versions than what's on rhel6. Our software that links with
netcdf therefore may need a whole cascade of upgraded libraries.
NetCDF4.2 does build and appears to work correctly, with the calls that
we make use of, linking with libcurl.so.4 and the associated libraries,
and with the libcurl.so.3 that's on on rhel5 systems.
Are there things that will fail if we try to run netCDF 4.2 linked these
older versions of libcurl? We understand that there's a capability to
read OPeNDAP sequence data in the latest release. Would that be impacted?

Russ and Dennis,
The installation instructions (link below) give version requirements
for the HDF5 and zlib libraries, but not for curl. What is the
version requirement for the curl library?
Thank you for your efforts on this new release.

Hi,
The netCDF-4.2-rc2 release candidate for version 4.2 is now available:

Note to OPeNDAP Users: If you are using the netCDF DAP interface and
your URLs contain constraints, then you are especially urged to
test out
this release. It includes major changes to the way that the OPeNDAP
code
handles constraints. External testers are needed to help remove any
remaining bugs in this code.
A list of bug fixes, utility enhancements, packaging changes, and
portability fixes is available in
  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/netcdf/release-notes-4.2-rc2.html
Please send any feedback on this release to
  support-netcdf@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
If no one reports any significant problems, this will become the
netCDF-4.2 release.
Thanks!
