Gembuds,
I'm having trouble using GDEDIT to ingest a new grid into an existing GFS
GEMPAK grid file.
Every morning we convert GFS grib2 -> GEMPAK grid files using NAGRBI2.
GEMPAK-NAGRIB2>
GBFILE=gfs.t00z.pgrbf2011032503.grib2
GDOUTF=gfs_3_20110325_0000_003.grd
PROJ=
GRDAREA=
KXKY=
MAXGRD = 1500
CPYFIL = gds
GAREA = grid
OUTPUT = n
G2TBLS=
G2DIAG=
OVERWR = NO
This produces gfs_3_20110325_0000_003.grd
This is too big to attach (33mb) so I made a copy using GDCFIL and copied
over TMPK@2%HGHT using GDMOD
(attached as gfs_3_20110325_0000_003_small.grd.tar.gz)
GDLIST was then used to create a sample input file for GDEDIT
GEMPAK-GDLIST>l
GDATTIM = last
GLEVEL = 2
GVCORD = hght
GFUNC = tmpk
GDFILE = gfs_3_20110325_0000_003_small.grd
GAREA = -90;-180;90;180
PROJ = ced
SCALE = 0
OUTPUT = f/tmpk_sample.dat
This produces tmpk_sample.dat (attached as tmpk_sample.tar.gz)
I then copy "tmpk_sample.dat" -> "test_sample.dat" and change the PARM name
from "TMPK" to "TEST"
When I follow these steps with other grid, I should be able to ingest the
new grid "TEST@2%HGHT" into gfs_3_20110325_0000_003.grd using GDEDIT. In
this case it doesn't work and kicks back the error "[GDEDIT -5] The grid
size in the edit file is incorrect." with both "GPACK=" and "GPACK=NONE"
GEMPAK-GDEDIT>l
GDEFIL = test_sample.dat
GDFILE = gfs_3_20110325_0000_003.grd
GPACK =
GEMPAK-GDEDIT>r
[GDEDIT -5] The grid size in the edit file is incorrect.
Parameters requested: GDEFIL,GDFILE,GPACK.
GEMPAK-GDEDIT>
I then copy "test_sample.dat" to "test_sample2.dat"
I see that it has the following header:
--BEGIN HEADER
Grid file: gfs_3_20110325_0000_003.grd
GRID IDENTIFIER:
TIME1 TIME2 LEVL1 LEVL2 VCORD PARM
110325/0000F003 2 HGHT TEST
AREA: -90;-180;90;180 GRID SIZE: 360
181
COLUMNS: 180 180 ROWS: 1 181
Scale factor: 10** 0
COLUMN: 180
ROW181 240.51 240.51 240.51 240.51 240.51 240.51 240.51
240.51
--END HEADER
It appears as if the COLUMNS are not correct in the header as there are in
fact 361 columns. So I update test_sample2.dat with the correct number of
columns per the instructions on
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/cgi-bin/gempak/manual/programs_index?gdedit

Is there any possible way to use GDEDIT to ingest grids into this GFS GEMPAK
file?
