AMS Ad Hoc Meeting, Wednesday, Jan 13, 1999 - Dallas, Texas
The following people discussed the next Unidata UserComm workshop
  at the AMS meeting:
- Joanne Graham
- Jennie Moody
- Michael Morgan
- Clint Rowe
- Tom Whitaker
- Tom Yoksas

We came to some measure of agreement suggesting the next Unidata
workshop
  should take the following approach:

    - focus on Users (that is, faculty who have some experience
with Unidata supported software, namely either McIDAS or
       GEMPAK/GARP)

- focus on applications of Unidata data (primarily, the combined
       McIDAS/NOAAPORT data feeds)

Our discussions circled around a few basic ideas that seemed
relevant to the community: what data are available to the
community (this brings up issues of community awareness and
understanding of how to use what is available) , what are we
doing with it, what _could_ we be doing with it

My view (which reflects both my personal opinion and my
interpretation of our discussion) is that we might have
        three general and related goals:
- to educate the User Community
on the data/information that is available
- to engage the Users
in a discussion of how they are currently using data, and
- to
foster the development (through a set of lectures and
laboratories)
of ideas and/or materials to enhance the application of data in
University-level instruction and directed student research.
Maybe this was a slow start, and this is still a very broad topic,
however, we didn't get much beyond this. Two alternate ideas were
expressed for how to develop and direct this focus on data types
    and their applications:

 - address different data types on different days, and broadly cover
a range of applications of available data (eg., models,
       satellite, etc.).

- pick one data type and cover it in-depth (for example,
       satellite data, profiler data, etc.).

Remember, these are thoughts to stimulate discussion before our
spring meeting. If you respond to this message, please include the
other UserComm members as well.
